In your own backyard, you have what it takes to make mulch by reusing what Mother Nature has already provided. Many find the same things that make up the mulch they pay money for as nuisances in their own yard (think mowing, raking, etc) but then spend money for it to use in their gardens. Save money by creating your own mulch by following the steps below for free.

The first step is to designate a location in your yard where you can store your mulch. In order to do this you need to figure out how much mulch you want to create and then ensure the area you designate is big enough to support it.

Raking is just part of owning a house but unlike the past where you bag them and leave them in the front of the house, this year, rake them into piles in your designated mulch area. Once there, mow over the pile to help break the leaves into shredded little bits.

Instead of piling all of the fallen sticks from the trees in your hard, break them down with a wood chipper and add them to the mulch pile with your leaves. These will add nutrients to your mulch that will later help your plants.

When you mow your lawn, if you have a bagger for your grass, you can add in the grass clippings to the mulch pile as well. If you do not have a bagger, rake up any clippings piled up and add them to the pile.

Once you have all of these in your pile you are ready to go and apply it your garden beds to help keep the moisture where it belongs in the soil with your homemade mulch.
