Beginning a self sufficient lifestyle is no easy task. A lot of planning should be done ensure the best results. One of the most useful things that people can do is wean themselves from electricity.

Whether we like it or not, electricity plays a major role in our lives. It powers our heating and air conditioning, we use it to light our homes, and we wash are clothes with machines powered by electricity. And these are just a few of the things we rely on electricity for!

Now most homesteaders will adapt some type of alternative or green source of energy. This might mean you install solar panels on your roof or a windmill in your backyard. Which ever option you choose, you will still likely need to adapt to using less electricity than you previously had.

In order to prepare for the reduction of electricity, it is a good idea to wean yourself from it in advance of moving into your self sufficient home. This will make the transition less shocking and you will not be shaking your head thinking, “what have I done?”

Start slowly when you begin the process of weaning yourself from electricity. You can turn off that dishwasher and start washing those dishes by hand. It’s certainly not luxurious, but it is a good idea to start getting used to these tasks quickly.

You can also follow up this weaning method by turning off your dryer. Construct a clothes line in your backyard and start hanging your clothes out to dry. Many people prefer the feeling of sun-dried laundry!

Over time, keep turning off those electric-drive appliances. Eventually, these new tasks will become ordinary and you won’t even miss those modern day conveniences.
