Saving money is an important task that can easily be overlooked. A general rule of thumb that you should try to follow is to save at least 10 percent of your total income. If you simply can’t set aside this much money, come as close as you can and consider finding alternative ways to add more money to your income.

The easiest way to save money is to setup a direct deposit account with your employer. Specify that you would like 10 percent of your income deposited into a separate savings account each pay period. You can deposit the rest of your paycheck into your primary savings or checking account.

With the money automatically pulled out of your paycheck and relocated to a safe location, you will find that it is easy to adapt to the smaller sum of money that you have available. Chances are you may never even miss the money.

As the money accumulates in your savings account, you will need to come up with a plan to manage it. Consider opening a ROTH IRA account where you can invest your savings for retirement purposes.

If you want to spend some time researching you options for your accumulated savings, consider opening a CD and depositing the money in order to gain a bit of interest. There are several CDs available for shorter durations. You will want to take note of the interest rate and any minimum balances that are required.
