Book Review: The Self-Sufficiency Handbook

The Self-Sufficiency Handbook was co-authored by Alan and Gill Bridgewater. This informative book was published in November of 2007 by Skyhorse Publishing. Readers will appreciate the depth of this book which covers everything from alternative energy to growing a successful garden.

Although this book is intended to be used by both urbanites and country dwellers, the chapter covering animal husbandry might be a bit odd for those living in an apartment! I’m pretty sure your neighbors aren’t going to appreciate a pig or a beehive in the common area – but I guess you never know!

The authors of this book suggest that you have to be serious about living a self sufficient lifestyle if you are going to succeed with it. Until you fantasize about the notion of self sufficiency, it probably is best to avoid this drastic step altogether. However, once you are ready to take this big step in your life, The Self-Sufficiency Handbook will provide you with the skills and knowledge that you need to help you make this transition.

One thing that I found unique in The Self-Sufficiency Handbook was recipes. You can learn how to make your own jam, or even your own wine. If you are interested in starting a garden to further your self sufficient lifestyle, this book will also come in handy. There is plenty of information about a wide selection of different types of edible plants. This includes information about how to grow and harvest each type of plant.
