Unlike chamomile and peppermint which are herbs, Aloe Vera is a succulent. It is much different than the other types of medicinal plants you may consider growing in your garden. Despite this distinction, the Aloe Vera plant is a great addition to your home.

Aloe Vera Plant Requirements: Due to the sensitive makeup of the Aloe Vera plant, it is not suitable for cold weather conditions. If you live in a colder climate, consider planting your aloe vera in a container so you can bring it inside during the winter months. Make sure your aloe vera plants get plenty of exposure to the sun. This type of succulent also prefers soil that drains well.

Medicinal Purposes: Aloe Vera is useful for several different reasons. Most homesteaders are prone to doing a lot of cooking, canning, and work around the house. These types of activities can result in burns and cuts and other painful ailments. The gel inside an aloe vera leaf is the perfect thing to ease the pain and help heal these ailments. Aloe Vera gel is also great to apply to sunburn. It will alleviate the pain and speed up the healing process.

Propagation: Aloe vera plants can easily be propagated. Simply look around the base of your plant for any baby plants that might have been produced. Once these babies have reached a few inches in height, you can simply remove them from the original plant.
