Imagine how nice it would be if you did not have to spend money on things such as vegetables and eggs. By learning how to live a self sufficient life, you can reduce your cost of living. A self sufficient lifestyle will also introduce you to fun new hobbies.

Growing your own food is typically one of the first steps people will take to begin their self sufficient life. Gardening is a great hobby and will save you tons of money over the course of the year. A vegetable garden is a great place to start, as seeds are readily available. Most common vegetables are hardy and easy to grow.  It is also a good idea to divvy up a portion of your yard where you can establish a small orchard. This combination will provide you will a nice amount of fruits and vegetables.

Once you harvest your fruits and veggies, you will need to learn ways to preserve them so they last for the remainder of the year. Consider canning your veggies and creating preserves with some of your fruits! Freezing fruits and veggies is another great way to save these foods.

Think about how many eggs you consume in any given week. The cost of eggs can quickly add up. Consider purchasing a few chickens that can provide you with fresh eggs daily. Not only do many types of chickens make fun pets, they can also help you lead a self sufficient lifestyle!
