The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Self-Sufficient Living was written by Jerome Belanger and published in December of 2009. Belanger emphasizes some of the advantages of living a self sufficient lifestyle in this book: eco friendly, healthy, and affordable.

The author of this book is no stranger to the self sufficient lifestyle. Both Belanger and his wife have been active homesteaders for many years. The author also operated a magazine called Countryside for approximately 3 decades. If you are a fan of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Self-Sufficient Living, you will definitely want to check out the many other books that Belanger has authored!

While some books about self sufficiency focus on either rural or city living, this book can be useful in either situation! There are chapters that focus on raising livestock, which obviously you can’t do if you live in an apartment, but you can look past these ideas and benefit from other useful topics. Oh, I should also mention it might also be a bit awkward if you try to apply the tips offered in the hunting section to your urban environment!

The information I found useful (and useful for urbanites) was the stuff that talked about the importance of cooking from scratch. What a great way to save some money in your budget while also learning to become more self sufficient. In today’s fast-paced environment, this is the type of stuff we need to do to get back to the basics!
