Published by DK Publishing in April of 2008, The New Self-Sufficient Gardener is a must read for newbie homesteaders. As I’ve discussed before, a successful garden is an essential ingredient for a self sufficient lifestyle. This book is the go to guide that covers just about every aspect of gardening that you can imagine.

In just 256 pages, renowned self sufficiency expert John Seymour walks the reader through the different stages of gardening. Starting with invaluable information about quality soil and deep bed gardening, Seymour provides expert knowledge about what it takes to become a self sufficient gardener.

One of my favorite portions of The New Self-Sufficient Gardener is chapter two. When most people think of gardening, they think of springtime and planting cucumbers or tomatoes. Chapter two discusses the different types of gardening you can do throughout the year. Different vegetables that can be grown in the winter, spring, summer, and the fall!

There is a separate chapter for growing different types of vegetables, fruits, and even herbs. There are several different types of each category of plants that Seymour discusses in detail.

Another important chapter for homesteaders to read thoroughly is chapter nine. The author spends a good amount of time talking about all of the different methods that homesteaders can use to preserve the food they grow. Seymour even covers the method of salting certain types of food. There is also additional information about making your own cider, wine, and even mead!
