An important part of the self sufficient life is spent finding creative ways to accomplish everyday tasks. Cleaning is a necessary chore that every homesteader must contend with. A trip to the local grocery store will reveal hundreds of different types of cleaning products. Many of these products are expensive and contain harsh ingredients.

Luckily there are a few household products that you can use for cleaning products. Baking soda is a great example of this and it is inexpensive to purchase.

What can I do with baking soda

If you rub some baking soda between your fingers, you’ll notice it has a smooth but grainy texture. Thanks to this texture, baking soda can be used as a wonderful scrubbing agent. Instead of using a powder cleaner like Comet, sprinkle a bit of baking soda on the tough stain instead. With the help of a scrubbing sponge, the stain will quickly disappear. Baking soda is gentle enough to use on a wide variety of surfaces around the house!

Tip: For really tough stains, create a paste of baking soda and water and allow it to sit for several minutes before cleaning!

If you have a problem with slow drains, consider flushing them with baking soda to eliminate the buildup in your pipes. All you need to do is add approximately 1 cup of baking soda to your pipes. Slowly add water until all of the baking soda has gone down your drain, but use only just enough. Let the baking soda soak in and work overnight before flushing with hot water.

Believe it or not – baking soda is also a great way to ease the itch of insect bites!
