While it is not necessary to start your tomato seeds indoors there are a few cases where it can be very beneficial to do so. If you live in a colder climate you can actually extend your growing season by taking advantage of indoor seed starting. Not all plants respond well to this type of growing environment but tomatoes will thrive if you plan correctly.

One easy way you can be more self sufficient is to make your own tomato cages. Every gardener who grows tomatoes will tell you that these plants can get out of control quickly. Placing a tomato cage around these plants is a great way to prevent your garden from being overburdened.
